4-Week Short Course: Techniques of Natural Light Photography Photography Course

LIGHTING
This photo is taken by Jim Zuckerman. Because the sun is so bright you can only see the out line of the elephant. Shooting into the sun creates a silhouette and this is called contra jouer. This is an example of natural lighting. The sunset is orange and yellow which makes you feel calm. The sun is in the centre of the page and is the second thing that you look at. The first thing you are drawn to is the Elephant and its reflection in the water. This is a very good example of lighting.

DEPTH OF FIELD
This photo is a great example of depth of field. It was published by Al Hannigan. The beetle and part of the flower is very very sharp compared to the rest. it really makes you focus on the beetle and all the different colours on it. The contrast against the bright yellow flower really stands out. The photographer used a big aperture to get this effect.

FOCAL POINT

This photo is taken by annie leibovitz. The focal point in this picture is the lady in the red dress because the background is very dull. It really stands out against all the buildings and the grey sky. It is quite mysterious and it makes you wonder what she is doing up there. I think it would be better if the sky was either bright blue, or a dramaticly dark sky, as it would match the dress which is also dramatic because of the colour red.

Composition
This picture is taken by annie leibovitz. It is inspired by the film Wizard of Oz. This photo is asymetric as the girl and dog are standng to the side. This gives you a feel of the environment they are in. Her face looks shocked/suprised giving you an idea of what she is looking at. Maybe this is the reason why she is standing back. In some cases it can create a dramatic impact on the audience. The contrast of the pink dress against the green vegetation really stands out.

This picture is taken by vee spears. She has taken it so your attention is set on the blue and red flowers. It is obvious she is trying to get this across as she has cut off part of the womans face putting the flowers in the center, showing that the woman isnt the most important feature in this photo. Also the woman is staring down at them making you want to look at what she is staring at. The effect of this photo isnt very focused and is quite blurry in places. Her skin is very pale against the black background making the flowers stand out even more. There isnt much lighting in this photo making it look quite dull. This gives it the effect of quite a sad depressing mood.
